MafiaKill jail cell after a failed crime

Jail

The jail guide — how you get arrested, jail time and buyout costs, breaking out, and how to avoid the cell in the first place.

Every criminal lands in jail eventually. Fail a crime with a jail risk, get caught stealing a car, or lose a PvP battle badly enough — and you will be looking at the inside of a cell. Jail stops your momentum, costs you time, and can cost you real money to escape.

But jail is a system you can understand, prepare for and even profit from. This guide covers how arrests work, what a sentence costs, how breakout attempts work, and the habits that keep you out of the cell entirely.

How You Get Arrested

Every crime has a jail rate — the chance that a failed job ends with a trip to the cells. The higher the tier of crime, the higher the jail risk. Car theft carries its own risks, and losing PvP battles can also land you behind bars.

When you are jailed, your sentence starts ticking. While inside, most of the game is off-limits: you cannot commit crimes, steal cars or run your operations until the time expires or you buy your way out.

  • Failed crimes — every solo and hostage job carries a jail rate.
  • Car theft — higher pools mean higher arrest chances.
  • PvP losses — losing badly can get you arrested.
  • Police events — special police activities can target you.

Jail Time and Buyout

Sentences range from short stints to long stretches, depending on the crime. Your sentence timer counts down in real time, and when it hits zero you are automatically released.

You do not have to wait. A buyout lets you pay your way to freedom, and the cost rises sharply with the length of your sentence — it grows exponentially, so the longer your sentence, the more painfully expensive a buyout becomes. Sometimes waiting is genuinely the smart play.

Sentences scale — and so does the price of freedom.
SentenceRelative BuyoutSmart Move
Short (20–60 min)CheapBuy out or wait — either works
Medium (60–150 min)ModerateConsider waiting if cash is tight
Long (150+ min)ExpensiveAlmost always wait it out

Breaking Out

Some players don't buy out — they break out. Your breakout chance is calculated from your level, your escape skill and the length of your sentence. The base chance is boosted the longer you sit, up to a cap, so a failed breakout doesn't necessarily end the attempt entirely.

Breaking out is the risky, exciting option. Succeed and you are free with your wallet intact; fail and you stay in the cell, possibly with a harsher stay. Only try it when the odds are in your favour.

  • Base breakout chance is modest but rises with your level.
  • Longer sentences add a bonus to your breakout odds.
  • There is a hard cap, so don't assume the odds always climb.
  • A failed breakout can make your situation worse.

Pro Tips

  • Avoid high-jail-rate crimes until you can afford the downtime.
  • Bank your cash so a jail trip doesn't empty your wallet.
  • On short sentences, waiting is free — spend the time planning.
  • On long sentences, compare buyout cost to what you'd earn in that time.
  • Breakouts are a gamble; use them only when buyout is unaffordable.

Pro Tips

  • 1.Check the jail rate before every job — it's displayed for a reason.
  • 2.Keep a 'jail fund' so a cell never stops you cold.
  • 3.Time in jail is idle time; plan your next moves while locked up.
  • 4.Low-tier crimes still pay — if you keep getting arrested, drop a tier.
  • 5.Gang protection can reduce the sting of losing PvP.
